Know the difference: Allergy vs Side Effect

The difference between a side effect and an allergy involves the nature of the body's reaction to a medication:


Side Effect

  • Definition: A side effect is an unintended, often mild or moderate response to a medication that occurs alongside the desired therapeutic effect.

  • Examples: Common side effects include drowsiness, nausea, constipation, or dizziness. These effects can vary in intensity and are generally predictable based on the medication's mechanism of action.


Allergy

  • Definition: An allergy is an abnormal immune response to a substance (in this case, a medication), which can cause a range of symptoms, some of which may be severe.

  • Examples: Allergic reactions can include hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, or anaphylaxis. Allergies are often unpredictable and can occur even after multiple doses without prior issues.


In summary, side effects are generally a common and expected consequence of medication, while allergies are immune responses that can vary significantly from person to person and can be more serious.
